Welcome to the National Centre for Research in Music Education and Sound Arts
The National Centre for Research in Music Education and Sound Arts (MERC) serves as the national hub for the coordination of and contribution to research in music education and sound arts. Through its activities the Centre will increase understanding and knowledge of the musical arts in education and in the wider community. MERC is devoted to developing the national and international profile of music education in Aotearoa New Zealand through its activities, partnerships and collaborations.

Il est bel et bon! – New Zealand’s first Research in Music Education Conference and the 31st Australia New Zealand Association for Research in Music Education (ANZARME) Conference was held at the Boat Shed, Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand, from July 3 – 6 2009.

MERC has a contract with the Ministry of Education 2008/2009 for the Development of Distance Music Learning Programme.

Online Real-time Music Tuition Project
MERC carried out a Ministry of Education research project based on a video conferencing trial of instrumental and vocal tuition to outreach schools in the South Island.

National Music Education Research Database
MERC continues to grow the online music education database which currently has 655 entries and grows weekly. The database is web enabled on MERC’s partner organization, Arts Hub Aotearoa.
