e-Journal of studies in music education

The e-Journal of studies in music education is the new name for the journal formerly known as Sound Ideas.

As with Sound Ideas, the e-Journal of studies in music education is devoted to music education concerns. Published three times a year by the School of Music, University of Canterbury, the last issue of Sound Ideas was published early in 2009 by Te Puna Puoro National Centre for Research in Music Education and Sound Arts, University of Canterbury, as a biannual downloadable journal.

The first on-line issue was put on this site in 2009 as Sound Ideas Volume 8. This was a special introductory issue, and is downloadable as a PDF. It is made up of a selection of articles from earlier Sound Ideas together with a list and content index of all nineteen issues of Sound Ideas from 1997 to 2008.

The first issue of the e-Journal of studies in music education continues the numbering system of Sound Ideas, starting with Volume 8 No. 2.

Each issue of the e-Journal of studies in music education includes between three and six fully refereed articles, together with information of interest to music educators, especially those in New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific area and South-east Asia. Researchers from these regions are invited to submit articles for publication in future issues of the e-Journal.

Subscribing to the e-Journal of studies in music education

Due to difficulties in setting up a secure on-line payment system, Volume 8 No. 2 is a free issue. Information on subscriptions to future issues will be posted on this site as it comes to hand.

Volume 7: Teaching to Listen

	Learning to listen is surely the most basic aspect of a musical education. The biggest difficulty for the teacher is knowing what listening to music means, whether it can be taught, and if so, how to teach it. Teaching to Listen focuses on a number of issues relating to how we hear, how we learn to listen and how we can teach the art of listening. Editor David Sell
